27th EGOS Colloquium, Reassembling Organizations

6–9 July 2011, Gothenburg, Sweden

Knowledge about assembling and reassembling organizations is now more important than ever. In the light of the current economic crisis, globalization, sustainable futures, financial regulation and social welfare are issues of immense importance for the second decade of this century. There will be a demand for organizational and institutional innovations to deal with these problems and this will have implications for both management practice and our understanding of organizations.

Note: Sub-theme 14: Art, Design and Organization

by Mary Jo Hatch, Gothenburg University, Sweden,
Stefan Meisiek, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark
and Ulla Johansson, Gothenburg University, Sweden

What can art, design and organization studies learn from one another? And where are their boundaries, when a growing number of organization scholars draw on design thinking and artistic theories to explain contemporary organizational phenomena? To answer such questions, this track will look for convergences between art, design and organization and hopes to attract those interested in their intersecting lines of flight.

EAD 2011: 9th Intl Conf of the European Academy of Design

4-7 May 2011, Porto, Portugal.

There is a sense of vertigo permeating contemporary culture as a whole, and design in particular. So much so, that we often find ourselves wondering if design as we have known it still matters. Design seems to have lost its universe of focus, branching exponentially into a multitude of concerns and activities formerly situated well beyond its scope. Likewise, design seems to be the new interest of so many professionals situated outside its area of expertise; not long ago it seemed like design was being courted, and maybe even actively cultivating, a territorial ambiguity that has kept its professionals worried, to say the least.

This dissipation of a discernible territory of practice could seem like a loss at first, until we gradually came to understand that Design is, after all and despite the contextual noise, a deeply human activity, and, as such, any circumscription of its potential would, in itself, be an artifice, an operational and transitory device; and that, rather than being devalued by this apparent dilution of its area of expert operation, Design suddenly has the opportunity to expand and mature as far as its context, content and purpose are concerned.

26th EGOS Colloquium

30 June - 3 July, 2010, Lisbon, Portugal

Sub-Theme 32: Design-Driven Innovation: Linguistic, Semantic and Symbolic Innovations vs. Technological and Functional Innovations:

By focusing on product form design (Rindova and Petkova, 2007) and the linguistic, semantic and symbolic innovation that can be brought about by the redefinition of product form (Ravasi and Rindova, 2008; Dell'Era and Verganti, 2009), we aim to stimulate an intensification of research in the management of innovation, in which technological and functional innovations is not the only focus. By addressing the design activity through the identity and the fast recognition of the objects rather than their form or functions, Hatchuel (2006) suggest an inspiring and fruitful framework.

Implications, consequences and opportunities will be discussed at the 2nd European Design Management Forum in Gothenburg 10-11 December 2009.There is a growing interest for design among management researchers and managers in practice. SCOS 2009 - Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism

8th - 11th July, Copenhagen and Malmoe, Denmark and Sweden

Organizations themselves – of whatever sort - are of course based on connectivity and separation, on the inter and the intra, and their diametric opposites. And organizational scholars, both ‘mainstream’ and ‘critical’, have reflected on a wide variety of issues which pertain to these themes. Thus there are well developed and longstanding literatures on culture, conflict, teamwork, competition, identity, diversity, inter-organizational partnerships (of whatever kind) and so on. For SCOS 27 we therefore encourage innovative and novel perspectives on such topics which do simply not rehearse established wisdom. Bridging is, moreover, absolutely central to the SCOS ethos of encouraging interdisciplinarity in an international environment. So we are, as ever, interested in papers about any aspect of organizations and organizing which connect together different knowledges and realities, different disciplines, different geographies, different cultures, academe and practice, ‘mainstream’ and ‘critical’ and so on. But the number of associations attached to bridges and bridging are limitless...

The Art & Science of Service Conference 2009

However, significant progress has been made recently in developing technical tools and techniques that facilitate the development of innovative services through a more structured approach. Thus it can be considered both an art and a science. The focus of this year's meeting, therefore, is to better define and understand service innovation and its challenges going forward."
